Профессор Брумфилд выступил с лекцией в центральной городской библиотеке имени В.В.Верещагина и передал в дар свою книгу.

Professor Brumfield donates book to Vereshchagin Central Library

В июне этого года одним из пользователей центральной городской библиотеки имени В.В.Верещагина стал известный фотограф и профессор славистики Университета Тулейна в Новом Орлеане Уильям Брумфилд. В нашей библиотеке ученый знакомился с информационными ресурсами по истории памятников архитектуры Череповца и Череповецкого района, необходимыми для издания его новой книги. В фондах библиотеки имеется большое количество литературы по истории нашего края. Большой интерес наш гость проявил к изданиям местного краеведа, исследователя церковной истории, Михаила Мальцева. 

13 июня в центральной городской библиотеке Уильям Брумфилд провел лекцию о русском фотографе начала ХХ века, изобретателе цветной фотографии, С.М.Прокудине-Горском, чью коллекцию фотографий, находящуюся в библиотеке Конгресса США, он курирует. Профессор рассказал, что именно по изображениям Прокудина-Горского он сначала познакомился с Вологодчиной. Посетители лекции смогли сравнить фотографии памятников, сделанных Прокудиным-Горским более 100 лет назад и Уильямом Брумфилдом в наше время. Брумфилд представляет это фотосравнение  мировой аудитории через специальный проект для сайта Russia Beyond The Headlines (зарубежный проект RT).

В отделе редкой и ценной книги центральной городской библиотеки хранится 15 книг Уильяма Брумфилда об архитектуре Вологодского области и других городов России. По окончании лекции профессор подарил центральной городской библиотеке свой новый, богато иллюстрированный труд "Architecture at the End of  the  Earth: Photographing the Russian North ", который будет полезен многим поколениям ценителей русской культуры.

In June of this year one of the scholars using the V. V. Vereshchagin Central Library in Cherepovets is the well-known photographer and professor of Slavic studies William Brumfield, from Tulane University in New Orleans. At the library Professor Brumfield worked  on the history of architectural monuments in Cherepovets and the Cherepovets Region and became acquainted with with information resources necessary for the completion of his new book. Library holdings include a large quantity of literature on the history of this area. Our guest also showed much interest in the work of Mikhail Maltsev, local historian and specialist in Orthodox Church history.

On June 13 at the Vereshchagin Central Library William Brumfield delivered a lecture on S. M. Prokudin-Gorskii, and early 20th-century Russian photographer and inventor of a process for color photography. Brumfield is a special curator of the Prokudin-Gorskii Collection at the Library of Congress in Washington. Professor Brumfield noted that he first became acquainted with the Vologda area through the Prokudin-Gorskii photographs. Those who attended the lecture could compare photographs made by Prokudin_Gorskii 100 years ago with the work of William Brumfield in our time. The Library's department of rare books contains fifteen volumes by William Brumfield about the architectural heritage of  the Vologa territory and other areas of Russia. At the end of the lecture the professor donated to the Vereshchagin Central Library a copy of his recent and richly illustrated book Architecture at the End of the Earth: Photographing the Russian North, which will be useful to many generations of those who value Russian culture.
